HVAC-R Efficiency & Maintenance
Air Conditioning & Refrigeration are among the most complex and energy-intensive pieces of equipment in institutional and commercial facilities. Because of their complexity, they offer maintenance and engineering managers big opportunities to improve energy efficiency, minimize repairs, and increase reliability.
To take advantage of these opportunities, managers often focus on three key areas — compressor optimization, refrigerant management and preventive maintenance. Using a strategic approach in these activities, managers can deliver benefits to facilities in terms of reliability and energy efficiency.
Compressor Optimization
In air conditioning and refrigeration systems, the compressor is the largest consumer of electricity, in most cases consuming about 70% of the total electricity. Reducing the amount of time the compressor runs will substantially reduce the amount of energy used.
Global Energy Solutions is a distributor of the SmartCool Systems™, a product line that specializes in energy and cost reduction technologies for the HVAC and refrigeration systems of commercial, industrial and retail businesses. The Smartcool™ product line of green technologies reduces the electricity consumption (kWh) and demand (KW) of air conditioning and refrigeration compressors. We uiltilze Smartcool™ products to optimize compressor operation, reduce runtimes, and reduce energy costs for our clients.

Refrigerant Management
Strategic refrigerant management is one of the most effective tools managers have to improve chiller efficiency. Unfortunately, most managers think of refrigerant management in terms of regulatory compliance, refrigerant inventories, and chiller-refrigerant conversions.
In fact, refrigerant management is a time-tested strategy that ensures equipment operates at its maximum efficiency. During operation, chillers develop small leaks in their sealed refrigerant systems. In addition to system refrigerant losses, oil acid and moisture seep into the system refrigerant, deteriorating system efficiency.
Once oil contaminates the refrigerant, system efficiency drops exponentially. Oil contamination of 1 % (by weight) produces a reduction of 3% efficiency and contamination of to 15% produces a reduction of 40 to 50% in efficiency.
The solution is to remove the refrigerant and clean it. However, that has proven to be a very disruptive and expensive process…until now.
